UCAS Applications
What is UCAS?
The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) is the online system through which all medical school applications in the UK must be made. For medicine, you can apply to a maximum of four medical schools and one additional non-medicine course if you wish. This makes every choice critical, as each application slot carries real weight.
Key Deadlines for Medicine Applicants
Medicine follows an earlier UCAS deadline than most other courses.
- September: UCAT results are available.
- 15th October (year before entry): Final submission deadline for medicine applications.
- November–February: Invitations to interview are released.
- March–April: Conditional offers are sent.
💡 Tip: Aim to finalise your personal statement and references by September. Leaving it late reduces your ability to refine your application.
UCAS Application Components
1. Personal Details
Basic information including residency and qualifications. Ensure your predicted grades are accurate and confirmed by your school.
2. Personal Statement
Your statement should be 4,000 characters (roughly one side of A4) and address:
- Motivation for studying medicine – why this career, and why you?
- Evidence of experience – work placements, volunteering, caring roles.
- Skills and values – empathy, teamwork, resilience.
- Reflection – what you learned, not just what you did.
👉 See our Personal Statement Guide for structure and examples.
3. Academic Reference
A teacher or tutor will provide a reference. Speak with them early so they can highlight your strengths in science subjects and your commitment to medicine.
4. Predicted and Achieved Grades
Most medical schools ask for AAA at A-level, usually including Chemistry and Biology. Some accept Maths or Physics as the third subject.
How Medical Schools Use UCAS
Different universities weigh UCAS components differently:
- GCSE-heavy: Oxford, Cardiff.
- UCAT-heavy: Newcastle, Nottingham.
- Interview-focused: King’s College London, St George’s.
